UK Disposable Vape Ban: Everything You Need to Know
From 1st June 2025 it will be illegal for any UK business to sell, distribute, or possess disposable vapes for sale. This applies to both physical and online retailers, as well as manufacturers and wholesalers.
This ban only applies specifically to single-use vapes which means devices that are not refillable or rechargeable and have coils that cannot be replaced. This decision is part of a wider push toward environmental sustainability and public health. More information can be found on the UK Government website here.
Why is the UK Banning Disposable Vapes?
Environmental Concerns: One of the biggest reasons for the ban is the environmental damage caused by single-use vapes. Currently, around five million disposable vapes are discarded every week in the UK. Most end up in landfills or are littered, leaching harmful chemicals like lithium, lead, and plastic into the environment. Their lithium-ion batteries also pose a fire hazard when they are not correctly disposed of. Recycling of these devices is complex and they require disassembly to separate the components.
Youth Vaping: Affordable, convenient and flavoured disposable vapes have contributed to an increase in vaping among young people, despite existing laws preventing sales to those under 18. The ban aims to address this by reducing the availability of such products.
Sustainability Goals: A circular economy promotes resource conservation by reducing disposable culture, and the ban is a critical step toward achieving this vision.
What Will Be Banned?
The ban applies to the sale of all single-use vapes, whether they contain nicotine or not. A disposable vape is defined as any device that is not designed to be re-used.
However, the ban does not affect all vaping products. Refillable and rechargeable vapes, such as pod systems, vape mods and kits will still be available. Pre-filled pods will also remain legal as long as they are sold separately from the device. Flavoured e-liquids will continue to be legal under separate regulations. Vapers who have purchased disposable vapes before the 1st June 2025 will still be able to use them, the ban will only apply to new purchases after the 1st June.
